After a sell-out 20 months of performances, Taylor Swift’s legendary Eras Tour has come to an end, leaving a lasting impact on fans worldwide and breaking records, not only monetary.
Taylor Swift’s legendary Eras Tour has come to an end after 20 months, 149 shows and a blockbuster concert film. The extensive music line up rounded up in Vancouver, Canada after the global mega star dazzled fans across 53 cities and five continents with record-breaking singing performances. Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has made headlines, not only for its impact on fans across the globe but for boosting national economies and breaking records including the highest grossing tour of all time topping $2bn (£1.6bn) – and that’s before factoring in the merchandise!
The stream of live performances kicked off in March 2023, in which time Swift has incredibly released three albums and has been awarded her fourth grammy for album of the year- the first ever to achieve this. During this time, Swift has also managed to pack in a relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce. The singer has sentimentally referred to the end of the tour as “the closing of the most extraordinary chapter of my life so far.”
Why was Taylor Swift’s Eras tour so groundbreaking?
First and foremost, the sheer scale of the tour. It had record attendances with tickets sold out in minutes, a 3.5 hour setlist and a mountain of news coverage ranging from Prince William bopping to the shows or world leaders begging for a concert in their own country. There’s simply never been anytihng quite as universally colossal as this tour. Ever.
Critics of the shows are going deeper. Swift has managed to capture a global audience of fans beyond the conceivable, but the Eras tour has felt more like a mass homage to someone beyond human.
Swift is often praised for her personability and relatability. She connects with her fans – whether this be on stage, interviews or via social media. Despite being on Forbes World Billionaire’s list, she is still the downtown American ‘gal who communicates real emotion through her music, engages her fans with ‘we’ and ‘us,’ and her smily ‘Oh hi!’ is synonymous with her way of greeting her fans like old friends.
Eras tour marks a profound turning point – bringing back community
The Eras tour has been a profound turning point –a transition from the Covid-19 pandemic back to real community. Even in the face of sold-out tickets or of events cancelled by terrorism like in Vienna, crowds gathered outside stadiums to sing her songs. Swift has someone managed to amass the people in a love for her, her music and for each other as fan synergy reigns.
Philosopher Simon Critchley goes so far as to say that for fans, its like “scratching a metaphysical itch.” He adds that Swift “mediates a form of communal belonging that is lacking in other areas of their lives.”
Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has been a landmark moment in history
Hunger for the Eras tour has been unparalleled with tickets sold out, fans paying thousands and many travelling across the world to get a slice of the action. People have done what it takes just to feel the experience, even non Swift fans. Swift herself commented that “although we are on our own in this big scary life, somehow it doesn’t feel that way when we’re singing the same words as 80,000 other people wearing glittery face paint.” Critchley summarises the phenomenon saying: “We live in an asynchronous world where no one’s experiencing the same thing at the same moment, and everything is fragmented. So what do we have left to bring us together? Live sports and live concerts.”
Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has been a landmark moment in history. It has shown the world that community, passion and humanity really do exist. Even in our conflicted, fragmented world of 2024.
