Donald Trump arrived earlier today into the Capitol to raving applause and backing from the rotunda to become the 47th president of the United States. He shook hands with Joe Biden as he was sworn in by the Supreme Court chief, and gave a controversial speech for his inaugural address, which is becoming a commonality for the 78 year old.
JD Vance has been sworn in as Trump’s vice-president, with Supreme Court chief John Roberts officially administering the oath that means Donald Trump is now the president of America, his second term leading the nation.
In his inaugural address, he emphatically gave a nationalistic tone, which struck a chord with the excited onlookers, who repeatedly chanted “USA, USA!” at the end of every sentence. Trump vowed to “put America first”, as he now prepares for his presidency.
Key moments from Trump inaugural address
“The golden age of America begins now,” he said. “From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer during every single day of the Trump administration. I will, very simply, put America first.”
He then moved on to the subject of the “unfair weaponisation” of the US Justice department. “Our sovereignty will be reclaimed, our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced.”
He continued: “The vicious, the violent and unfair weaponisation of the justice department and our government will end, and our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free. America will soon be greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before.”
Lambasted Joe Biden and inability to deal with crises
He also criticised Biden: “We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalogue of catastrophic events abroad. We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defence of foreign borders, but refuses to defend American borders, or more importantly, its own people.”
Trump stated to the rotunda at the Capitol: “My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal and all these many betrayals that have taken place. To give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed, their freedom. From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”
Saved by God to make America great again
He rounded off by stating that he was “saved by God to make America great again”, after his assassination attempt nearly cost him his life, as the bullet fired at him skimmed his ear.
What the future will hold for Trump’s America, and for Europe, remains to be seen.
