A major new Universal Studios theme park is officially coming to the UK — and it’s set to open in 2031 just outside Bedford, north of London.
The long-anticipated project will mark Universal’s first resort in Europe, creating 28,000 jobs and bringing an estimated £50 billion boost to the British economy by 2055.
The plan, unveiled this week by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, follows a deal struck between the UK government, Universal’s parent company Comcast, and Bedfordshire Council. Starmer hailed the move as “a transformative investment” and “a vote of confidence in Britain’s future as a hub for global entertainment.”
The 200-hectare site, a former brickworks south of Bedford, is expected to welcome over 8.5 million visitors in its first year. The project also includes a 500-room hotel, immersive lands, cutting-edge attractions and high-speed transport links — with a new train station and easy access to Luton Airport and Eurostar routes from London St Pancras.
Universal Studios brings top-tier attractions to the UK
While Universal hasn’t confirmed specific attractions yet, expectations are sky-high. Fans are hoping for experiences based on franchises like Jurassic World, Minions, Fast & Furious, and Harry Potter — all featured at Universal’s other parks in the US, Asia, and Singapore.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the project as “fantastic news for tourism and for British families,” adding that it will also provide training and jobs for young people in hospitality and the creative industries.
Bedford residents react to Universal Studios project with mixed feelings
The government says around 80 per cent of future staff will be hired from the surrounding region. Universal has committed to working with local colleges and universities to help develop the workforce. However, the plans still need final planning permission.
Many Bedford residents are thrilled, calling the development ‘a lifeline’ for the local economy. But some have voiced concerns about traffic, infrastructure and rising rents.
If all goes ahead as expected, Universal Studios Bedford could soon give Disneyland Paris a run for its money — and put the UK back on the map as a world-class theme park destination.
