Stickers, scams, and summer spending : Here’s the one low-tech bank card trick you didn’t know you needed.

Let’s set the scene: it’s summer, you’re finally off work, the sun is (mostly) shining, and all you want to do is enjoy your break. Maybe you’re grabbing ice cream at the beach, booking flights, or tapping your card at a market stall abroad. The last thing on your mind? That somewhere out there, some digital villain is eyeing up your bank details.

Yet every year, as soon as holiday mode kicks in, the scammers come out to play. According to cybersecurity experts at Kaspersky, over 2.3 million bank cards across Europe were compromised between 2023 and 2024. It’s not just elaborate cyber heists, either—classic card theft is alive and well, especially when we’re distracted, relaxed, and swiping away more than usual.

So, what can you do besides eyeing your bank app every five minutes? Enter the surprisingly clever sticker hack that security pros are raving about.

The sticker trick: Outsmarting thieves with one genius move

It sounds almost too simple to be true, but here’s the gist: stick a fake PIN on your bank card. Seriously. Just grab a tiny sticker, jot down four random digits (not your actual PIN, obviously), and pop it on the back of your card.

If you ever lose your card or—touch wood—it’s stolen, here’s what usually happens. The thief, feeling rather smug, sees that handy note and assumes you’re the forgetful type who needs a reminder. They try the PIN at the nearest ATM or shop. It fails. They try again. Still no luck. After three or four wrong goes, most banks will automatically block the card for security reasons. That’s right: the criminal gets nowhere, your cash stays safe, and you have time to notice your card is missing and ring your bank before anything bad happens.

It’s so obvious you’ll wonder why you never thought of it.

Why scams spike in Summer (and why you’re a target)

Let’s face it—most of us aren’t on high alert when we’re on holiday. The sun’s out, the pina colada is in hand, and we’re more likely to fall for a dodgy “bank” text or forget to cover our PIN at the supermarket till. Scammers know this. They also know you’ll be spending more and checking your statements less, making summer the perfect season to try their luck.

And that’s not just paranoia talking. Bank notifications blend in with all the usual holiday spam, and if you’re away from home, it can take hours (or days) to notice anything’s wrong. That’s why every extra minute counts.

More ways to keep your card safe (and your sanity intact)

The sticker trick is brilliant, but don’t stop there. Experts suggest a few more habits to make your money even safer:

  • Ditch the obvious PINs: No birthdays, no 1234, and please, not “0000.”
  • Keep your PIN to yourself: Not even your best mate or your nan needs to know it.
  • Don’t store your PIN in your phone: If you do, at least use a note disguised as something boring.
  • Change your PIN regularly: The more often, the better.
  • Stay alert: Keep an eye out for unfamiliar charges, especially if you’re travelling or using new ATMs.

It’s all about outsmarting the bad guys

The beauty of the sticker trick is how it turns a thief’s own impatience against them. They think they’ve won—until your bank’s security kicks in and they’re left empty-handed.

So, before you pack your bags, take 30 seconds to stick a fake PIN on your card. It’s simple, it’s effective, and if you ever need to explain it to your mates, you can say you’re just one step ahead of the criminals.
