If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to turn vision into reality, look no further than Ana Maria Llopis, a powerhouse entrepreneur who proves that ambition and grit can move mountains. Born in Carúpano, Venezuela, in 1950 to a Spanish family, Ana María grew up with international roots but a distinctly Spanish identity. Her background gave her the drive and perspective to make a lasting mark in the world of business.

Ana María’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. She earned a degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Maryland, followed by a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Even in fields dominated by men, she excelled, graduating summa cum laude,  a sign of the determination and brilliance that would define her career.

Her early professional path began in the U.S., where she gained experience in major corporations, but it was back in Spain where she truly made her name. She took on senior roles in Procter & Gamble, Banesto, and Schweppes, sharpening her expertise in management, innovation, and strategy. Then came the move that changed everything: in 1995, she founded Openbank, Spain’s very first online bank. At a time when digital banking was still uncharted territory, Ana María dared to take the leap, and it paid off. Openbank transformed the way Spaniards managed their money and cemented her reputation as a visionary leader ahead of her time.

Never one to stop innovating, in 2008 she launched ideas4all Innovation, a platform designed to harness collective intelligence and creativity within organisations. By empowering people to collaborate and problem-solve, she created a space where bold ideas thrive, exactly the kind of forward-thinking environment that reflects her values. Beyond her entrepreneurial ventures, Ana María has shattered glass ceilings in corporate leadership. She became chairwoman of DIA Supermarkets, making her one of the few women to head a company listed on Spain’s IBEX 35. A passionate advocate for gender equality, she has spoken candidly about quotas: “I was selected for a board to fulfil a quota, and I say it with pride. I prove my worth, and that’s the end of it.” She’s equally committed to helping others climb: “We need to put ladders in place so others can reach the places we’ve reached.”

Her accolades, including the International Women’s Forum Award and the Leadership Woman Executive Award from FEDEPE, only highlight what so many already know: Ana María is not just a leader, but a mentor and a role model. Her story isn’t just about building companies; it’s about building pathways. For women dreaming of leading, creating, or innovating, Ana María Llopis is living proof that starting from scratch is no barrier to building an empire.
