Nearly 25 years have passed since fans of Tolkien’s works saw Middle-Earth on the big screen. However, this winter, we can return to the world of Elves, warriors and wizards with The War of the Rohirrim – the first animation set in the Lord of the Rings universe.
The film is set almost 200 years before Frodo’s quest. Rohan is ruled by King Helm Hammerhand. He is conflicted with the Dunlendings, led by Wulf, seeking revenge for his father’s death. However, contrary to the hopes of Tolkien’s fans, the film isn’t entirely focused on the famous ruler but on his daughter, Héra. Tomboy-ish and rebellious, she sets out on a mission that may determine the fate of Rohan.
The cinema is the best place to follow the tale of the brave Riders of Rohan, but if you’re curious about when the film will appear on streaming services, VOD and DVD, keep reading our guide.

When could The War of the Rohirrim be released on VOD?
For now, Warner Bros., the distributor, hasn’t announced when the movie will premiere on digital. Much will depend on how The War of the Rohirrim will perform at the box office.
Joker: Folie à Deux, a most recent and massive flop, dropped on VOD only 25 days after it opened in cinemas. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, that also underperformed financially, hit digital in the US 31 days after its cinematic debut (39 days in the UK).
Warner’s most popular films take longer to reach VOD. Wonka and Dune: Part 2 were released digitally almost a month and a half after the premiere, while Barbie hit digital nearly two months after debuting on the big screen. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, however, went away from that pattern – Tim Burton’s smashing hit arrived on VOD only after 32 days in cinema.
Given that, The War of the Rohirrim may become available for rental and purchase around Tuesday, 7 January 2025. If it performs better, the date may also slip to Tuesday, 14 January 2025 or even to late January/early February 2025.
Keep in mind that these dates are our predictions – Warner Bros. hasn’t yet provided any information on the subject.

When could The War of the Rohirrim be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
The release date of the film’s physical copies is more difficult to predict, as Warner Bros. doesn’t have one set pattern in this case. Some movies, such as Wonka, Barbie and Dune: Part Two, hit DVD and Blu-ray about a month after debuting on VOD. On the other hand, Beetlejuice 2 waited 42 days for release, while Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – as many as 50.
In the best-case scenario, The War of the Rohirrim may arrive on store shelves in the first half of February 2025. However, it’s also possible that for the DVD and Blu-ray editions viewers will have to wait until late February or even early March 2025.
When could The War of the Rohirrim be released on streaming services?
With a few exceptions, Warner Bros. films generally hit streaming platforms quite fast. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga took 3 days to drop on Max, Dune: Part Two took a week, Wonka took 10 days, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took 17 days.
When physical copies of The War of the Rohirrim hit the stores, the film won’t take long to debut on streaming. The animation may hit Max in the US and Sky/Now in the UK in March 2025.
