The country near Spain where you can ‘live like a king’ on €500 a month

Rent for around €200, meals for €2More expatriates come to TunisiaLiving expenses in Tunisia

As major European cities are getting more and more expensive and fast-paced, more people are looking for alternatives.

There are no perfect places — every destination comes with trade-offs, and you always have to give something up in exchange for something else. That’s just how it works.

Still, according to reports in the Italian press, there’s a country just a short distance from Europe that ticks a lot of boxes: sunny weather, long stretches of beach, a slower pace of life, and prices that won’t break the bank.

And it’s only 725 kilometers from Spain, the distance between Palma de Mallorca and this country’s capital.

Just across the Mediterranean Sea is Tunisia, on the North African coast; a country that is drawing more and more attention for its low cost of living and laid-back pace.

According to Italian outlet Moralizzatore, living in Tunisia on €500 a month is not only possible, it’s comfortable. “With 500 euros you can live like a king,” say the Italians.

In many areas, you can rent a decent apartment near the coast for around €200–250. A full meal can cost as little as €2, and fresh seafood dinners rarely go beyond €15. A quick lunch? About €1.50.

More expatriates come to Tunisia

Particularly appealing is the northern coast of Tunisia, with its smaller cities and villages. Many Italians are retiring there for a slower pace of life. Recently, more digital nomads and even entire families are deciding to move there.

Not just because of the low costs, but also for the reduced stress, more free time and the freedom to enjoy everyday pleasures without European financial pressure.

Despite being in Africa, Tunisia is not at all unfamiliar to many Europeans. French is widely spoken in the country, and cultural influences from Europe are visible. Another plus, connections to Spain and Italy are frequent and inexpensive, making the country even more accessible.

Living expenses in Tunisia

According to the website Expatistan, average living expenses in Tunisia are around €744 per month. But many foreigners who live there say it’s possible to spend far less by just adjusting expectations and embracing a simpler lifestyle.

Cutting back on Western comforts may be necessary, of course, but for those willing to adapt, Tunisia offers something increasingly rare: a place where life is still affordable, time feels abundant, and peace of mind doesn’t come with a hefty price tag.
