Public housing revolution plans have been officially announced by Spain’s president: Big plans, bigger promises.
Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has thrown down the gauntlet, announcing a new public company that will tackle Spain’s housing shortage. Two million square metres of land will be set aside for affordable housing, and the government promises that “thousands and thousands” of new rental properties will be created.
A major chunk of this plan includes 13,000 homes from the so-called Sareb and 17,000 more to come.
What’s the catch? Well, this public company will have priority when it comes to buying properties and land – bypassing regional rights. And forget selling to vulture funds – these new homes are set to stay public.
