Massive python leaves locals rattled as it drifts down waterlogged road – what’s it hiding in that swollen belly?
A six-metre python floating serenely down a flooded road has left locals and internet users alike completely stunned. The slippery spectacle, captured on video and shared by The Bangkok Post, unfolded in Pattani province in Thailand, following torrential rains that turned streets into rivers.
This isn’t your average garden snake – the reticulated python, famed as the world’s longest serpent, made a chilling splash in a country already teeming with wildlife that lures millions of tourists every year.
Flood fright!
The enormous reptile, with its stomach noticeably bloated, sparked feverish speculation about its last meal. Was it a couple of unlucky chickens or perhaps even someone’s beloved dog? Locals couldn’t be sure, but the beast’s shocking appearance had many second-guessing their safety.
Sadly, the python was found dead just days later, likely succumbing to the extreme weather conditions that had thrown it into the public eye.
Cold-blooded facts
The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus), native to Southeast Asia, can grow up to an eye-watering nine metres in length. That’s as long as a bus or nearly the height of a three-story building! Unlike venomous snakes, these muscular marvels rely on sheer strength to take down their prey. Wrapping their powerful bodies around their victims, they constrict and suffocate them before swallowing them whole.
But don’t let their massive size fool you – these bus-long cuddle-munchkins are typically shy and not considered a threat to humans under normal conditions; unless you poke them, or unless they’re hungry. That said, extreme situations, such as the devastating floods in Pattani, can force these slithering giants into unexpected places.
Scales and tales
With their intricate geometric patterns in golds, browns, and blacks, reticulated pythons blend seamlessly into their natural habitats. However, their adaptability extends to water – these expert swimmers often find themselves afloat during floods, much to the terror of those nearby.
This latest sighting has raised eyebrows not only for its sheer size but also for the bizarre circumstances surrounding it. While some marvel at nature’s raw power, others are just glad the snake didn’t bring a more venomous friend to the party.
Floods, fears, and fangs – when nature breaks the rules, you never know what might slither by!
