If you have an excellent command of English, an eagle eye for accuracy and a journalism qualification, we might have just the job for you at Silicon Republic.
Fancy joining the ace Silicon Republic team, and working at the cutting edge of innovation media? Here’s your chance.
We are seeking a copy editor and writer at SiliconRepublic.com. This will be a full-time, permanent position (following six months’ probation) reporting to our Production Editor.
About the role
Duties and responsibilities in this role include copy-editing internal and external copy submissions for publication on SiliconRepublic.com. This may involve trimming text, editing to our style, generating engaging headlines and fact-checking.
Some feature and news writing will also be required, which will involve research, communicating with sources, and interviews, including video or audio interviews from time to time. To that end, any experience on the audiovisual side would be a bonus.
This role will also involve working on the production of our regular ezines, as well as preparing/adapting content for different social media platforms.
Who should apply
This role is suited to someone with exceptional command of written English and who is a stickler for accuracy. You must have a strong ability to spot errors and refine text with respect to the original sources. You must also be comfortable working with technical language from across all STEM disciplines.
The ideal candidate will be able to find interesting angles for storytelling and craft precise and descriptive headlines and introductions. They will be committed to accuracy and willing to learn more about a complex topic in order to cover it correctly.
They will also need to be comfortable with remote work – Silicon Republic is a remote-first employer – and able to manage their time and communicate effectively while working independently.
A background in science and technology is desirable, but not necessary if the candidate can demonstrate a strong interest in technology, science and innovation.
Recommended qualifications and skills
- Keen interest in science and technology and its impact on society and the future of work.
- Some professional experience working in writing and editing.
- Familiarity with the online news environment.
- A level of comfort with all the main social media platforms.
- Ability to work to a style guide.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Good grounding in and/or familiarity with technical and scientific language.
- Understanding of media law in Ireland.
- Third-level qualification in journalism, communications, science communication or equivalent.
- Experience using software such as Trello, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Office Suite, and photo editing software such as GIMP or Photoshop.
- Experience using any content management system (CMS) would be very desirable.
We will be moving quickly on this so, if you’re interested in joining the team, please submit a cover letter and CV to jobs@siliconrepublic.com before 1 December. Thanks for your interest.
