23-year-old Polish woman Julia Wandelt, has taken to social media with fresh DNA test results that, according to her, confirm a biological link to Gerry McCann – the father of Madeleine, who vanished in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in 2007. Is there anything to these claims?
Wandelt first made waves on the internet two years ago, launching an account under the name ‘@IAmMadeleineMcCann’ and posting side-by-side pictures highlighting her supposed resemblance to the missing Madeleine. Now, on her new Instagram handle ‘@AmIJuliaWandelt’, she has dropped what she calls ‘irrefutable proof’ that backs up her sensational claim.
Despite widespread scepticism and a previous DNA test ruling out any connection, Wandelt is refusing to give up.
A case of mistaken identity – or the truth?
The drama began in February 2023 when Wandelt posted online, pointing out what she said were striking similarities between herself and Madeleine. Her claims sent the internet into meltdown, with speculation spiralling out of control.
The media circus soon swept her onto American TV, where she was grilled on Dr Phil about why she believed she could be the long-lost girl. However, apparent cracks soon emerged in her story, and in a later BBC interview, she backtracked – admitting she had no hard evidence and regretted the furore her statements had caused.
Yet now, two years on, she’s back with another round of DNA tests. Could this be a genuine breakthrough, or is it just another chapter in a bizarre saga? Only time – and a forensic expert – will tell.
