Forget shelling out fortunes for that once-coveted Golden Visa – Spain’s glitzy door to EU residency is about to close this April, and it’s leaving many would-be sunseekers out in the cold! The Spanish government has officially announced the end of its Golden Visa scheme – originally launched in 2013 – which granted non-EU citizens the right to live in Spain in exchange for hefty investments. But with the clock ticking, potential expats are now flocking to a simpler and far more ‘gold-free’ alternative.
Enter the Non-Lucrative Visa: the new darling of non-EU would-be residents hoping to dodge damp winters back home. Unlike its pricier cousin, the Non-Lucrative Visa demands no job offers or multi-million-euro property deals. Instead, applicants simply need enough savings to prove they can support themselves without working in Spain. It’s a neat loophole, which grants a one-year residency permit that can be renewed for up to four years – and can eventually pave the way to permanent residency.
The rules are quite straightforward: keep your feet planted in lovely España for five continuous years, and you can swap that Non-Lucrative Visa for permanent residency rights. That means access to Spain’s national health service, discounts on public transport, and all the perks of living like a true local. But watch those absences! You can’t go missing for more than six months in a single year, and the total time spent away from Spain over five years mustn’t exceed ten months.
A fresh twist, however, is that the old rule about losing temporary residency if you exceed six months abroad in a single year has now been scrapped. Still, immigration offices may interpret regulations differently – leaving some new residents tangled in bureaucratic red tape. For peace of mind, experts suggest keeping those paella-filled feet firmly on Spanish soil for the first five years to steer clear of any nasty surprises.
So, if you’re fancying some fun in the sun without splashing out on those golden eggs, this Non-Lucrative Visa just might be the sizzling solution you’ve been waiting for. With the Golden Visa heading for a final adiós, there’s no time like the present to seize this ‘non-lucrative’ opportunity – and swap rainy days for sangria-filled soirees on the Costa del Sol. Adiós, Golden Visa, and hola to a simpler slice of Spanish life!
