I do wonder exactly what Nicolas Jackson will be thinking when he sees the kind of striker names Chelsea are in talks to try and sign this summer.
Jackson came in last summer and had a very slow start to his Chelsea career. He grew in confidence and his performances got much better, he ended the season strong. But there’s no doubt that he is still a young and raw striker adapting to the Premier League and developing.
So why on earth Chelsea are even contemplating buying another striker who mirrors that is beyond belief. Multiple reports have stated that Chelsea have been and are still in talks to sign Jhon Durán of Aston Villa, or Samu Omorodion of Atletico Madrid. Both are just 20-years-old and are unproven players with potential.
Jackson must be wondering why Chelsea are looking to bring in another striker of the same stature as him, rather than an older striker who will not block his long-term future at Chelsea and also, can provide him leadership, experience, and nurturing on the training pitches and in games. I could give you countless examples where this has worked a treat at other clubs and at Chelsea. Having a young striker develop alongside a more experienced striker is a great recipe for success.
What if Jackson blocks one of the new 20-year-olds we are looking at? what if they then block him? None of it makes any sense and is not smart at all.
That’s before even mentioning the fact that this squad has a dire need for more established players and proven quality experience – it’s a glaringly obvious problem that pretty much every Chelsea fan, pundit, and former player has noticed and has mentioned numerous times last season. The striker position is THE most important to get right, and we are in danger of getting it very wrong, in my opinion.
