Opinion: Marc Guehi to Chelsea could be smart but not the best choice

Not a transfer rumour rated article as I already have one of those out today, but there is another rumour to touch on.

Marc Guehi back to Chelsea.

Journalist Graeme Bailey has said this on Guehi back to Chelsea:

“Guehi is someone who they like, he’s high up on the list. Palace have got issues, a January deal is not something Guehi is pushing for.

“He’ll have a year left on his deal next summer, and will be a very attractive proposition for one of the top six. He’s one to keep an eye on for sure, we know Chelsea like him, and Chelsea do want to upgrade the options behind Fofana and Colwill.”

I know the source here is not highly rated, but I’m speaking on it because Guehi is a name that we keep being given as a centre back target at SPTC so there is absolutely something still there. And Chelsea absolutely want to sign a new centre back.

There may well be an opportunity arising here as well, with Guehi going into the last year of his contract in the summer of 2025 and a chance to perhaps get him a little cheaper than as Crystal Palace were previously asking for.

Chelsea have matching rights on any offer that comes in and is accepted by Palace, meaning that the decision would then go down to the player and Chelsea’s offer would also have to be accepted, should they make one. I’d fully expect offers to be coming in very soon now as well because he has a lot of clubs interested in him.

Would he want to come back to Chelsea? I actually think he would be quite appealed by that, as long as he was given some first team assurances.

I love Guehi and think he would bring a lot of what we need at the back especially leadership and organisation. I’m not fully convinced he would be the best option for us, but I would certainly not be against it at all.
