The Euros are over, the Copa America is over. We do have some games to come in the Olympics still, but Chelsea have rightfully been pretty strict with allowing which players to play in that, and Enzo Fernandez was denied his request to play there. And I’m glad it was.
Enzo has just lifted the Copa America trophy with Argentina over night, another major winners medal for his cabinet, another huge achievement for a player who is going far in this game.
At just 23-years-old, Enzo has won Copa America and the World Cup with his country, that’s really quite incredible.
But now, he needs to turn his attentions back to domestic football, and winning a trophy with Chelsea. This is now a big season ahead for Enzo.
Chelsea have invested a huge chunk of cash in Enzo and have showed a lot of faith and belief in him becoming a big player for the club. I, like many of us here, was ecstatic when Enzo finally got over the line and joined Chelsea in the 2023 January transfer window. On this site, the confirmation of Enzo joining Chelsea is still the most commented on article the site has ever produced (in four years) – that says it all.
But Enzo has not yet been fully at it at Chelsea, and that is down to a number of reasons really. He’s largely been mis-profiled and playing out of position, he has been playing through injury, and he’s been playing in a team that has been attempting to be transitioned and whilst doing so have been poor, and also under different managers.
We all know what it’s been like at Chelsea these last couple of seasons, it’s not been great. Enzo is a born winner, he’s a South American fighter. He just wants to fight and win. At Chelsea, we haven’t been doing that lately.
But Enzo now also needs to step up, like his team mates, and like everyone else at the club. This season fans need to see wholesale improvements, and we need to see improvements from Enzo too. He needs to step up, and I know he will – I truly believe he will.
Enzo under Enzo (Maresca) I think has the makings of being something special, hopefully. Maresca’s style of football should suit Enzo, hopefully. I think it will, I hope that Maresca can the manager to get the best out of Enzo. But I’m not going into next season blindly, and I will wait to see how this situation plays out.
But I know the quality Enzo has and what he can do, we have seen that with Argentina, and we have seen it even at Chelsea in small pockets. He will sustain some form and consistency, but he will need his team mates to do the same.
As I say, BIG season ahead for Enzo, and for Chelsea in general. The improvements need to come now. The progression needs to progress.
