Today has seen the first lot of Enzo Maresca content flood the media waves and social media, as Chelsea launch the first interview and pictures of our new head coach.
His words are great really, I enjoyed listening to him and seeing the images of him at Stamford Bridge today. It does give you some freshly renewed hope ahead of the new season. I think he spoke very well and said the right words, and it just felt honest and real.
But some of the reactions I’ve seen going around is all a bit too much in either direction. Some people are out there writing him off already because he is inexperienced and a ‘Championship’ manager blah blah blah. Others are out there completely overhyping him and typing ‘aura’ this, ‘aura’ that on every image of Maresca being put out there today.
Just stop! Let’s just relax a bit either way and just let him come in, settle, get his team together, get his style of play in place, and let him work. Let’s just back him without going over the top thinking it’s the next coming of Pep Guardiola. We’ve been here many times before lately, no?
I’m more than happy to be optimistic with all of this coming out today and as I said, his interview and first images at Stamford Bridge are very positive and good to see. It does fill you with a bit more hope. But I’m trying to be a bit more cautiously optimistic going forward.
Maresca has a hugely tough task on his hands, and I’m happy just to sit back, support them all, and watch to see how it plays out. I think we can be quietly confident but without being too smug or overly excited right now. There’s a long way to go to get Chelsea challenging again at the top, and there are MANY top teams in this league now. We have some way to go.
I think being overly positive can be just as bad as being overly negative. The pressure and hype can be a bad thing. I’m all for backing them and getting behind the new head coach, but let’s just try and keep the pressure off them all for now and just back them.
