Nintendo Switch pirates know that they have to tread carefully to avoid the eye of Sauron, but on April 1, caution levels are reaching an entirely new high. For years now, the control panel used by people who mod their Nintendo Switch has launched a special joke to celebrate the jesting holiday. And in 2026, that practical joke could end in bans.
Hekate is a bootloader that launches before whatever operating system is installed on the hardware. The tool can be used in a variety of ways, like selecting how to load firmware and backing up the Switch’s internal hard drive.
This morning, Hekate users woke up and discovered that their Nintendo Switch controls suddenly weren’t working. Hekate currently takes whatever input the player attempts and does the complete opposite; if the user taps up, the cursor goes down, for example. “I am not amused,” one Switch pirate wrote on Reddit after uploading a video of the practical joke. “I hate April Fools day sometimes,” another surprised Hekate user wrote.
The inverted controls can be turned off once the player realizes what is going on. But what makes this prank dangerous for pirates is that a wrong tap could cause their Switch to do something they didn’t intend. If the system connects to the internet or accidentally updates to the wrong version, the Switch then runs the risk of getting banned. Though some users got past the new controls with some stress, some haven’t been so lucky.
“RIP to my switch that just got banned because I unknowingly tapped on the wrong button and accidentally loaded up online with mods installed,” one Switch pirate wrote on the thread showcasing the prank.
This isn’t the first time Hekate has had some fun with its users on April 1. In 2025, Hekate modders saw their cursors turn into the troll face meme. Though it was obviously a gag, Hekate had people sweating.
“Please help, I haven’t used the switch for a week and I don’t know what happened,” one Switch pirate wrote at the time.
“Damn, I’m very scared,” another panicked user wrote, in fear of their inability to control the modded Switch normally.
