Historical romance series are having a moment right now. Bridgerton season 3 stormed into the most-watched spot on Netflix after its debut in spring, and Prime Video now has a similar show that will appeal to fans of this genre.
My Lady Jane is a reimagined, feminist telling of the Nine Days’ Queen, Lady Jane Grey from Tudor times. The story is based on the book by Cynthia Hand, Brodie Ashton and Jodi Meadow.
The series is filled with an all-star British cast, steamy scenes, swash-buckling fights, hilarious narration and a modernised take on the period – all sprinkled with a dash of fantasy, as the world is filled with shapeshifters.
Critical acclaim and word of mouth have ensured that the series has rocketed into the second most-watched spot on Prime Video, just behind the staple series, The Boys. If you’ve binged your way through Jane and Guildford’s story and want to know if there’s more to come, we have everything you need to know.

Will My Lady Jane return for season 2?
Prime Video has not confirmed if My Lady Jane will return for a second season. However, the showrunner is certainly up for it.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer Gemma Burgess gave the following quote:
If we are fortunate enough to get a season 2, then we are going to be exploring all of them growing up and moving on and figuring out how to survive in the world where Jane is free, but the kingdom is not. Because Mary’s still on the throne. There’s a lot more work to do before things are right.
Considering the success of the series, a second season wouldn’t come as a surprise. Plus, the final episode made a point of mentioning all the leftover plot threads, such as Mary’s terrifying reign, and the numerous secret relationships.
There’s also a chance that Amazon will follow the trajectory of the books, but if it does that, then we’ll be getting a brand-new setting, and almost certainly a new cast. More on that later.

When could My Lady Jane season 2 be released?
Without having confirmation of a second season of My Lady Jane, it’s hard to predict when it may be released.
Filming for the first series kicked off in 2022, and the series finally hit Prime Video on 27 June 2024. So, if the production time is the same for a hypothetical season 2, then we probably won’t see My Lady Jane season 2 until 2026 at the very earliest.
If Prime Video announces more on the future of the show, we’ll update this article.
Who could return for My Lady Jane season 2?
If My Lady Jane continues to be set in the Tudor times, then we would expect to see the following cast members return:
- Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey
- Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley
- Jordan Peters as King Edward VI
- Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey
- Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley
- Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour
- Kate O’Flynn as Queen Mary
- Máiréad Tyers as Susanna
- Isabella Brownson as Lady Katherine Grey
- Robyn Betteridge as Margaret Grey
- Henry Ashton as Lord Stan Dudley
- Oliver Chris as The Narrator
- Abbie Hern as Bess
- Joe Klocek as Fitz
- Christian Patterson as Charles
Given her recent interviews, we’d also expect to see Gemma Burgess to return as showrunner.

What could the plot of My Lady Jane season 2 be about?
The end of season 2 showed that Jane and Guildford had escaped to the countryside after narrowingly avoiding execution by Queen Mary. After confessing their love for one another, Guildford willingly shapeshifted, and carried Jane to safety on his back in horse-form.
The final scene shows the pair kissing in the morning sunshine. This confirms that the Lord’s werewolf-esque curse had been broken and that he now has control over his Ethian nature, rather than turning every time dawn breaks.
He suggests that they travel the world. However, Jane recognises that as long as Mary still sits on the throne, then she’s still needed in England. Guildford vows to stay by her side.
There are plot points from the book that haven’t been explored yet. For example, Entertainment Weekly points out that in the original story, Jane discovers she’s an Ethian, in the form of a ferret.

Executive Producer Meredith Glynn has given a few ideas of what she’d like to see from a follow-up season, telling the Express the following:
“There are people in season one who, without spoiling, if you know Tudor history go on to lead big, bad-ass lives. And also there are characters like Katherine Grey (Isabella Brownson) who had a really tragic life. And it would be great to be able to retell a tragic character’s story. Frances Grey went on to serve Mary’s court even though Mary had killed her daughter. So, there’s lots of different stories that would be really fun to carry on.”
The ending montage also revealed that Bess (the future Queen Elizabeth I in real life) is an Eithian fox, the continuation of Lady Frances and Stan Dudley’s affair, the secret marriage of Lady Katherine Grey and William Seymour, and King Edward VI and Fitz about to sleep with another.
Will season 2 adapt the next book in the My Lady Jane series?
The next book in the YA novel series is My Plain Jane, and instead follows a different character: Jane Eyre. Jane and Guildford are not in the next book at all.
Therefore, if Prime Video followed the source material, we’d get a brand-new cast. This seems unlikely, as from interviews we’ve seen so far the crew are keen to keep the original story going.
