Now, Motorola appears to be gearing up for its successor. Just don’t expect a design overhaul – more minor changes are most likely.

Here’s everything we know about the Razr 50 Ultra, which will likely be known as the Razr+ 2024 in the US.

When will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra be released?

While we haven’t had any confirmation from Motorola regarding release date at this stage, the release dates of recent models give a rough idea:

Based on last year, Motorola is likely to launch the Razr 50 Ultra around June or July 2024. However, it may repeat the situation of 2022, when the launch outside China was delayed by several months.

If Motorola sticks to its current naming conventions, it’s likely that the new Razr 50 Ultra will be marketed in the US as the Razr+ 2024. MSPowerUser, a site that leaked a photo of believed to be the Razr 50 Ultra, states that “The phone will be available in the US through Verizon Wireless, one of Motorola’s long-term partners, under the Razr+ branding.”

An exclusive report from Smartprix also claims that the Razr+ 2024 naming is confirmed for the US release. Additionally, we can “expect the phone to be launched next month, i.e., June 2024.”

How much will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra cost?

According to the same Smartprix report, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 will be priced at $999 for the 12GB/256GB variant in the US. This pricing aligns with its predecessor, the Razr+ 2023, which also debuted at $999 for the 8GB/256GB configuration.

This report also indicates a potential €1200 price tag for the EU market, mirroring last year’s Razr 40 Ultra. Similarly, the anticipated price for India is INR 89,999, matching the launch price of the Razr 40 Ultra in 2023.

Although not mentioned, this might mean that the £1,049 price in the UK might also remain the same as last year.

For context, here are launch prices of the previous models:

Foldable phones are generally expensive, yet Motorola has managed to keep its pricing relatively reasonable. At this point, considering recent reports, we expect the company to maintain the current prices without any additional cost bumps.

What specs and features will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra have?

While technical specs for the new model remain unclear, the leaks of a near-identical design suggests Motorola may opt for a minor refresh.

Here’s everything we know at this stage.

Design

Last year Motorola made a huge change when it came to the design of its foldable smartphones. The Razr 40 Ultra went for the looks of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, ditching the previous curved design reminiscent of the former Motorola Razr phones.

MSPowerUser has revealed what its claimed to be the first renders of the Razr 50 Ultra. It bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, particularly evident when examining the front panel.

It still seems to have a significant bezel around the screen to protect the display, plus a punch-hole selfie camera.

Glory!

On the rear side, the design comprises two distinct sections: a top portion housing two cameras (main and wide angle) along with a screen, and a bottom section crafted from a grey material featuring the Motorola logo.

This setup suggests the possibility of introducing a completely new colour variant for the upcoming model. In contrast, its predecessor initially launched with three colour options: black, blue and red (with apricot Peach Fuzz later added to the lineup).

According to Smartprix, the phone will be available in three colour options: Midnight Blue, Spring Green and Hot Pink. It means that the previously leaked image from MSPowerUser might be the Razr 50 Ultra/Raz+ 2024 in Midnight Blue finish.

Additionally, this report claims that the phone will feature IPX8 water resistance and eSIM support.

Display

Last year’s model had a 6.9-inch 2640x1080p 144Hz pOLED screen and an additional 3.6-inch external panel.

A recent report from Smartprix claims that these specs will stay the same.

Performance

Previously, MSPowerUser mentioned that Motorola has codenamed its upcoming flagship Razr handset ‘Glory’ and is developing it under the model number ‘XT-2453-3’, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.

Now a report from Smartprix confirms that Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

In the previous model we were dealing with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Cameras

The Razr 40 Ultra had 12Mp main and 13Mp ultrawide cameras on the rear, along with a 32Mp selfie camera on the front. In our review, we stated that the two main lenses aren’t bad – solid specs, but nothing outstanding.

These are still better specs than those on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, especially when it comes to the selfie camera, however Motorola could be tempted to make an upgrade this year.

Indeed, Smartprix claims that the Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 will boast a brand new dual-camera setup on the rear, featuring a 50Mp wide angle lens and a 50Mp 2x telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the same 32Mp front camera will take care of the selfies.

Battery & charging

Last year’s model had a 3800mAh battery with 33W charging.

According to Smartprix, the Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 will feature a slightly larger 4000mAh battery, along with support for both USB-C wired charging and wireless charging. However, the speeds haven’t been revealed for either.

Software

The Razr 40 Ultra came equipped with a customised version of Android 13, bearing a striking resemblance to Google’s default but boasting many additional features.

So it is almost certain that the Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 will arrive with Hello UI on top of Android 14 out of the box. Android 15 is on the way, but the phone is likely to be released before then.

Motorola also promised three major version updates last year and we haven’t heard about anything changing, so it’s safe to assume that this will be the same.

However, Smartprix reports that “the Razr 50 Ultra will be Motorola’s first clamshell foldable with integrated AI-powered photo/video capture and AI editing tools.”

That’s all we know about the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 at this point. In the meantime, check out the other best foldable phones you can buy right now.
