Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may be Sony’s only major, tentpole single-player first-party release in quite some time, but it’s also been a massively spectacular one for the company. On top of having enjoyed widespread critical acclaim, the open world superhero title has also seen widespread commercial success, with sales continuing to climb at a steady pace.
For instance, as part of a presentation shared by PlayStation’s new co-CEOs during Sony’s recent business segment meeting, it has been revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold over 11 million units worldwide as of April 20. Earlier in the year, Sony announced that the game had sold 10 million units worldwide as of December 31, so while its momentum has certainly slowed down where sales are concerned, it’s still continued to move units at a decent pace.
In March, developer Insomniac Games released a new patch for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that added new features such as New Game Plus and Mission Replay. In spite of the superhero title’s critical and commercial success, however, Insomniac was one of several first-party PlayStation studios to be hit with layoffs amidst Sony’s mass layoffs.
