With the backlash against its $80 price before launch, where Nintendo had to outright justify its value, Mario Kart World has already sold 9.57 million units. Nintendo’s latest fiscal report for the quarter ending September 30th revealed the sales figure alongside the fact that Donkey Kong Bananza has sold 3.49 million units since launching on July 17th.
Overall, Nintendo Switch 2 software sales reached 20.62 million. However, there is a caveat to Mario Kart World’s price debate. Its sales include the $499.99 Switch 2 bundles (which are only available until this Fall). With the console retailing for $449.99, that effectively reduces the cost of the title to $50.
So, while unit sales are certainly impressive, the overall dollar sales would likely be lower than you’d think. Of course, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continuing to sell – yes, even after Mario Kart World’s release – topping nearly 70 million units, Nintendo is no doubt playing the long game. What’s a few million units sold at a relative discount in the grand scheme of things?
