Malaga’s 16th year of celebrating Noche en Blanco, held on May 10 from 8pm to 1am, will transform the city with 150 free cultural activities across 81 venues, honouring the 25th anniversary of local artist Rafael Pérez Estrada’s passing.
The event, promoted by Fundación Unicaja and Cervezas Victoria, exhibits Pérez Estrada’s surrealist legacy through immersive installations like ‘Inmersión Pérezestradiana’ and the multisensory exhibition ‘La ciudad velada, mixing physical artefacts with digital technology.
Shops will stay open most of the night, as will museums and galleries to invite people from the Costa del Sol to enjoy the night. The programme includes multiple categories: 43 art and museum exhibitions, 13 performing arts shows, 38 music and dance performances, eight street art displays, 11 audiovisual presentations, 16 children’s activities at Nochecita en Blanco, and three additional, surprise, elements.
Fourteen special monument visits and extended museum hours make the most of the experience. The most notable include REA Danza’s “Seducción y bestialidad” in Plaza de la Constitución and piano recitals by conservatory students in the Cathedral’s Patio de las Cadenas.
This year’s event puts a special emphasis on accessibility, incorporating symbols for mobility, visual, and hearing impairments, a QR code for adapted programmes, and a sign-language itinerary. Artists with disabilities, like visually impaired storyteller Isabela Méndez, stand out in Nochecita en Blanco. Mayor Paco de la Torre called it a ‘magnificent way to embrace Malaga’s culture’, with some activities requiring prior registration at lanocheenblancomalaga.com.
