Lazio 1-0 AC Milan: Isaksen strike dents visitors´ Scudetto hopes

Gustav Isaksen further dented AC Milan’s fading Serie A title hopes as his 26th-minute strike earned Lazio a 1-0 victory at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

After seeing leaders Inter drop points against Atalanta a day earlier, Massimiliano Allegri’s side were unable to take advantage, leaving them eight points adrift of the summit.

A last-ditch tackle from Oliver Provstgaard stopped Strahinja Pavlovic from giving Milan an early lead before Kenneth Taylor’s powerful strike rattled the crossbar at the other end.

But just two minutes after hitting the woodwork, Lazio lead through Isaksen, who muscled his way past Pervis Estupinan before finishing confidently into the bottom-left corner.

Daniel Maldini should have doubled the hosts’ lead nine minutes before the break after capitalising on a mistake by Koni De Winter, but he shot tamely at Mike Maignan.

Milan improved after the interval and only a fine stop from Edoardo Motta thwarted Christian Pulisic, with the Lazio goalkeeper quickly picking himself up to deny Youssouf Fofana’s close-range header.

Zachary Athekame thought he had equalised for Milan with a brilliantly-taken effort that whistled into the bottom-right corner, but the goal was ruled out for a handball against the substitute before striking home in the 75th minute.

And despite a sustained spell of pressure, the Rossoneri were unable to find a way through, with Luka Modric’s curled attempt that sailed over the closest they came to a leveller.

Data Debrief: Milan endure a significant stumble on the road

After getting themselves back on track in the title race with a win over Inter in their last league match, Milan failed to build on that result here in a game that could potentially sway which way the Scudetto will go this year.

And the defeat was a rare one for Milan, who lost their first game on the road in Serie A in 2025-26, after remaining unbeaten in each of their previous 14 away matches (W9 D5) in the current campaign.

For Lazio, meanwhile, they have now won back-to-back matches against an opponent with more points in the table at the start of the day for the first time since a run of three games back in December 2024, though they were made to work for their victory.

Maurizio Sarri’s side finished the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 0.41 from their seven shots, with only two of those on target, compared to Milan’s 1.19 from their 17 attempts at Motta’s net.
