Norwegian Princess’s son accused of rape.
The royal circles of Norway have been rocked by scandal as Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, faces explosive allegations of rape and violence.
Høiby, 27, stepson to Crown Prince Haakon but with no royal title or official duties, has found himself at the centre of a legal storm. Arrested late in the night on Monday, November 18, he stands accused of engaging in sexual acts with an individual who was ‘unconscious or otherwise unable to resist,‘ according to Norwegian police.
Five possible victims so far
The arrest, made at exactly 11.12 PM (local time) in a car alongside a victim from an unrelated incident, is just the tip of the iceberg. Høiby is now facing charges involving a total of five victims, with offences ranging from rape to violent assaults and criminal damage.
Police revealed on Tuesday, November 19, that the charges now include maltreatment in close relationships, violations of restraining orders, and even driving without a valid licence. Adding to the drama, officers have conducted a search of his residence at Skaugum, a property near the home of the Crown Prince and Princess.
Royal silence and a troubled past
As these allegations shake the Norwegian monarchy, the palace has maintained a stony silence. It’s not the first time Høiby has found himself in hot water. Back in August, he was briefly detained over accusations of physical assault and criminal damage involving a former partner.
In that case, Høiby admitted to causing bodily harm while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, and damaging her property, offering a public apology for his actions.
The troubled royal stepson has also been previously charged with abuse against former girlfriends Julianne Snekkestad and Nora Haukland, as well as threatening a man.
“A serious matter,” says Crown Prince
Crown Prince Haakon broke his silence on the latest scandal, telling Norwegian TV: “These are serious allegations Marius now faces, and we are, of course, thinking of all those affected.”
Høiby’s lawyer, Oeyvind Bratlien, insists his client is innocent, stating he will fight the accusations. A court hearing was held behind closed doors as Høiby challenged the police request for preventive detention.
A royal no more?
Despite his connections to the Norwegian royal family, Høiby remains outside the line of succession, with no title and no official duties. But his actions have brought unwanted attention to the House of Glücksburg, with many questioning how much longer the family can remain unscathed by his spiralling behaviour.
As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the man once dubbed the ‘prince of controversy‘ – a nickname now all too fitting.
This is not just a royal affair; it’s a legal battle that could reshape how the Norwegian royals manage the scandals that seem to follow in their wake. Will this be the scandal that finally shakes the throne?
