In January 2019, Smollett claimed that he was the victim of a hate crime. He told Chicago police that he was physically assaulted and that the assailant hurled homophobic and racial slurs at him. Smollett went to a local hospital and was released that day.
Shortly thereafter, police discovered that Smollett staged the hate crime with two acquaintances. In February of that year, the Mighty Ducks actor was charged by a grand jury for filing a false police report. The charges, however, were dropped a month later.
In 2020, though, another investigation against Smollett had taken place, and he was re-indicted for multiple counts of disorderly conduct over filing false police reports. The following year, Smollett was convicted in December 2021, and he was found guilty of five out of six counts of disorderly conduct.
In March 2022, Smollett was sentenced to 150 days behind bars in addition to 30 months (two and a half years) of probation. He was also ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution to Chicago and was fined $25,000, per ABC News.
