Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Miles (and Miles) Ahead of Standard Sedans

The Four Percent

I TRY TO RUN at least one tank of gas through every test car, but with the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited I didn’t have that kind of time. The South Korean car maker’s redesigned gas-electric sedan—large, comfortable, solid to the touch if slightly intangible in appeal—extracts up to 54 highway miles from a gallon of gas (51 mpg in Limited trim). Our tester had a theoretical range of 673 miles, but with no place to go and nowhere to stay once I got there, I was obliged to patrol mostly empty interstates, rolling up the miles, hour after hour, watching a needle that didn’t want to move.
