Hollywood’s golden Aussie Hugh Jackman may have left the stage hand-in-hand with a new leading lady, but back home, there’s a divorce saga dragging on longer than a West End encore. Despite announcing their shock separation in September 2023 after 27 years of marriage, Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are still legally hitched – and it’s all down to cold, hard cash.
No prenup, no peace?
The couple, who tied the knot back in 1996, never signed a prenuptial agreement – a decision that’s come back to bite. At the time, Deborra-Lee was the bigger name, and Jackman was just another up-and-comer. Fast forward nearly three decades and he’s now worth a reported $100 million, while Furness has amassed a tidy $50 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. But there’s more – Daily Mail sources claim their combined estate could be as much as $250 million.
And therein lies the problem. “Hugh and Deborra-Lee have not yet filed for divorce because they are struggling to reach an agreement on how to divide their assets,” a source spilled to Daily Mail Australia. “Deborra-Lee feels entitled to more money than Hugh is willing to offer.”
Enter stage left: Sutton Foster
As if things weren’t complicated enough, Jackman has moved on – and not just with anyone. His new flame is Broadway darling Sutton Foster, with whom he shared the spotlight during the New York revival of The Music Man, which ran from December 2021 to January 2023. Their chemistry clearly didn’t end when the curtain came down. The pair went public in January 2025, just months after Foster filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years, screenwriter Ted Griffin, in October 2024.
While there’s no suggestion of a physical affair, sources claim Furness believes her ex was emotionally entangled before the official split.
A fresh start in Bhutan for Deb Furness?
But don’t picture Deb drowning her sorrows. According to Us Weekly, she’s jetting off to Bhutan to clear her head and start a new chapter. “Deb is currently rebuilding her life and taking a vacation to Bhutan to start fresh and get away from the pain,” a friend told the outlet. “She’s relied on a strong support system of female friends. She also spends time with other women who’ve been through similar situations who offer her unwavering support.”
While Jackman’s love life may be moving along with Broadway-style flair, the legal side of things remains firmly stuck in Act One. Until the money matters are resolved, Hugh and Deborra-Lee remain Mr and Mrs – at least on paper.
