50,000 ancient Roman coins discovered in Sardinia!
A very lucky diver has struck historical gold after stumbling upon a jaw-dropping hoard of ancient Roman coins beneath the waves off Sardinia. The staggering find in ‘the land of giants’ – potentially as many as 50,000 bronze and copper coins – has experts buzzing about a hidden shipwreck just waiting to be discovered.
It all started with a single shimmer beneath the waves. Near the coastal town of Arzachena, a diver spotted something glinting from the sandy seabed, tangled in the seagrass. But this wasn’t just any old bit of metal – this was the tip of an ancient ‘money island’. Before long, tens of thousands of coins, dating back to between 324 and 340 AD, were uncovered in pristine condition.
Roman treasure in ‘the land of the giants‘
“The treasure found in the waters of Arzachena represents one of the most important discoveries of numismatic finds in recent years,” declared Luigi La Rocca, Italy’s director general of archaeology, fine arts, and landscape.
The sheer scale of the haul is staggering – early estimates suggest at least 30,000 coins, with some experts believing the total could soar to 50,000. If confirmed, it would be one of the largest ancient coin discoveries in recent history.

But where did this fortune come from? The location of the discovery – a sandy clearing surrounded by seagrass – has archaeologists convinced there’s more to the story. The weight of the coins strongly suggests they belonged to a merchant ship, possibly lost to the waves centuries ago.
While no wreck has been found yet, experts are hopeful that further searches could reveal a long-lost vessel resting on the seafloor, perfectly preserved by the Mediterranean’s underwater landscape.
Local authorities send in the experts: The treasure hunt is on!
The moment the diver realised the scale of the find, authorities were alerted, and a crack team of expert divers – including Italy’s art protection squad, undersea archaeologists, firefighter divers, and border police – rushed to the scene.
Alongside the mountain of ancient coins, divers uncovered walls of amphorae – narrow-necked jugs with two handles – further fuelling speculation that a shipwreck is lurking nearby.
“This incredible discovery highlights the richness and importance of the archaeological heritage hidden beneath our seas,” La Rocca added.
For now, the search continues – but if this sunken fortune is anything to go by, the Mediterranean could be holding onto an even greater historical prize just waiting to be unearthed.
