Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be about to press play on their most explosive Netflix project yet, a documentary about Princess Diana.
The Sussexes, who last week renewed their deal with the streaming giant, are reportedly in talks to mark the 30th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death in 1997 with a blockbuster tribute.
According to The Sun, the project is being lined up for 2027 and would be the centrepiece of the couple’s new “first look deal” with Netflix.
Diana’s lasting shadow
Harry was just 12 years old when his mother was killed in a Paris car crash. In his memoir Spare, he recalled the trauma of walking behind her coffin and admitted he once convinced himself she was merely “hiding,” a belief he says comforted him in later years.
The prince has already fronted two hit Diana documentaries, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy and Diana, 7 Days, both made in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of her passing. Each drew millions of viewers. If history repeats itself, a 30th anniversary special could be Netflix gold.
From golden goose to Prosecco deal
Harry and Meghan first inked their mega deal with Netflix in 2020, thought to be worth a staggering $100million (£74million). Their six-part series Harry & Meghan became Netflix’s biggest ever documentary debut, racking up 29 million households in just four days.
But their other offerings, from polo to Invictus Games specials, have flopped. That explains why the couple’s new deal, announced on August 11, is rumoured to be on slimmer terms.
PR guru Mark Borkowski told the Daily Mail: “They have shot the golden goose of 2020, more of a ‘we’ll call you’ than ‘here’s the chequebook’… This is less champagne budget, more Prosecco by the glass.”
Meghan’s lifestyle empire
The new contract also keeps Meghan’s lifestyle show With Love, Meghan on the air, with a second season and a December Christmas special reportedly under discussion.
Meanwhile, the Sussexes are working on Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, a documentary about orphaned children in Uganda living in the shadow of the HIV/Aids crisis.
And while Meghan keeps the brand ticking over, it is Harry’s potential Diana project that looks set to be the real ratings magnet.
Netflix still on board
Despite tightening the purse strings, Netflix insists the Sussexes remain box office. And, the Sussexes themselves are putting on a brave face. As previously reported by the viraltrendingcontent, Meghan said last week: “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together… creating thoughtful content that resonates globally.”
But behind the glossy soundbites, the question lingers. Can Harry and Meghan deliver another global smash, or will Diana once again be the one to rescue their Netflix fortunes?
Little-known truths about Harry and Meghan
They might be one of the world’s most photographed couples, but behind the glossy Netflix deals and royal drama there are plenty of lesser-known details that even seasoned royal watchers have missed.
Set up by a friend:
Harry and Meghan were introduced on a blind date arranged by a mutual pal at Soho House in London. Meghan’s only pre-date demand was that the prince was “nice.”
No royal fanfare at first:
Harry had never watched Suits and admitted he had no clue who Meghan was before they met. She, in turn, had little idea what she was walking into, apparently.
Love under the stars:
Just two dates in, Harry whisked Meghan off on a camping trip in Botswana. The couple have said they fell in love “under the stars” in Africa, a backdrop that would become central to their relationship.
Six months undercover:
Before the tabloids caught wind, the couple quietly dated in secret for half a year. Meghan later said the biggest change was not her relationship but “people’s perception” of it.
A royal plea:
In an extraordinary move, Harry issued a statement in 2016 condemning press harassment of Meghan, warning: “This is not a game, it is her life.” Rarely had a royal intervened so bluntly.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner:
Harry got down on one knee while the pair were roasting a chicken at home. The engagement ring was a mix of a Botswana diamond and two stones from Princess Diana’s collection.
Secret baptism:
Before the wedding, Meghan was quietly baptised into the Church of England by the Archbishop of Canterbury in a low-key ceremony attended by Harry and Prince Charles.
Something blue:
On their wedding day, Meghan had a piece of fabric from the blue dress she wore on her first date with Harry stitched into her veil as her “something blue.”
Hollywood meets royalty:
Meghan’s Givenchy wedding gown, with its clean bateau neckline, was designed by Clare Waight Keller. She later swapped it for a Stella McCartney evening dress that cemented her style-icon status.
These intimate details, from chicken dinners to African stars, are part of the couple’s whirlwind journey. And now, with Diana back in the spotlight, Harry and Meghan’s Netflix story looks far from over.
