Google has released a new firmware update for all of its Pixel devices, and while it isn’t the full Material 3 Expressive. That many are holding out for, it’s arguably even more important.
Pixel firmware number BP2A.250805.005 has started rolling out to all Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 through to the current Google Pixel 9 series, and it includes the August 2025 security patch.
There aren’t any new features, as you might expect on the eve of Android 16’s belated Material 3 Expressive design refresh. However, there are some essential bug fixes.
The first of these (as per Android Central) fills a serious security vulnerability that allowed attackers to remotely execute code on a Pixel device without any input from the user whatsoever. Scary stuff.

Minor Pixel fixes
There are two more minor fixes included with this August security patch. The first fixes an issue whereby the scheduled dark theme wasn’t kicking in under certain conditions.
The other fix addresses issues with the back command in both three-button and gesture navigation under certain scenarios.
While it’s not the most exciting Pixel update we’ve ever received, it sounds like you should be installing it as a matter of urgency. If you haven’t received the prompt on your Pixel phone, check Settings > System > Software updates > System update to try and kick things off manually.
Google has said that it’ll be rolling out in phases depending on your particular mobile network operator and device.
This should prove to be the final major firmware update before Google launches the Pixel 10 range on 20 August. We’re expecting four phones that broadly resemble their Pixel 9 predecessors, but with faster processors, an additional camera (in the case of the Pixel 10), and Qi2 compatibility.
