Global fintech giant Block opens new Dublin office

Block operates several popular fintech services, including the consumer-focused Cash App and seller-focused Square.

The US-headquartered global fintech giant Block has opened a new office in Dublin, positioning the location as a strategic European hub for the company.

Commenting on the launch, John O’Beirne, the CEO of Square International at Block, said, “Dublin is the natural home for Block’s European growth.”

“Ireland has established itself as one of Europe’s leading financial services hubs,” he added. “Block’s investment here reflects our confidence in the region’s regulatory environment, entrepreneurial spirit and the calibre of talent available. We’re committed to being an active partner in Dublin’s continued economic success.” O’Beirne is the chair of the Fintech and Payments Association of Ireland.

Block operates several popular fintech services, including the consumer-focused Cash App and seller-focused Square. The company also operates a music platform called Tidal; Bitkey, a bitcoin wallet; and Proto, a suite of bitcoin mining products and services.

The new office is located in the city’s One Park Place, near many large multinationals in what Block called “Europe’s fintech epicentre”. The strategic location allows the company to create a dedicated space for collaboration and seller engagement, it has said.

The office comes with a product demo lab, flexible workspaces with 50 workstations, and dedicated community engagement spaces. The location will allow the company to accelerate policy engagement, build seller empowerment by connecting with Dublin-based and European sellers, and help develop talent, it said.

“This office represents more than a physical space – it’s a statement of our commitment to the region and our belief in the transformative power of financial technology,” O’Beirne added.

“We’re here to drive meaningful dialogue on the issues shaping financial innovation, and to ensure that our ecosystem serves everyone, not just the privileged few.” O’Beirne was featured on SiliconRepublic.com’s The Leader’s Room podcast in 2024.

Commenting on the new office, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, TD said: “Global tech companies like Block are choosing to base themselves in Dublin because of the strategic international advantages that Ireland offers. It’s a testament to our highly skilled workforce, investment in research and development, and our pro-enterprise focus.”

Block was formerly known as Square until changing its name in December 2021. The company did so to differentiate its corporate entity from its Square Seller brand.
