A serious shooting incident occurred at Fort Stewart, one of the largest US Army installations in Georgia, when a soldier opened fire on his colleagues, leaving five service members injured. The suspected gunman has been arrested and is now in custody.
The shooting took place on August 6 2025, at approximately 10:56am local time in an area assigned to the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team. The base immediately went into lockdown, which lasted until midday, as security forces responded to reports of an active shooter. According to US military sources, the suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Sergeant Quornelius Radford, a logistics sergeant serving at the base. He allegedly used a personal handgun, not a military-issued weapon, during the attack. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Emergency medical teams provided immediate treatment to the five injured soldiers before they were transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital. Three of the victims required surgery, while the other two sustained less severe injuries. All are reported to be in stable condition, and no fatalities have been confirmed.
Authorities confirmed that nearby schools and facilities were placed on precautionary lockdown during the incident. Security measures have since been lifted, and the base has returned to normal operations. The case is being investigated by the US Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in coordination with the FBI and local law enforcement. The suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. Investigators are also reviewing whether any prior warnings were overlooked. Fort Stewart is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and approximately 10,000 soldiers and family members. This incident has raised renewed concerns over the presence of personal firearms on military installations. Officials have confirmed that support and counselling services are being offered to those affected by the attack as the investigation continues.
