A massive €29 billion international airport is heading to Poland, and it’s about to change the way Europe flies. This colossal new project will welcome 34 million passengers a year and will have its grand opening in the heart of Poland’s capital region.
The €29bn mega-airport project is definitely not your average airport – it’s set to be Europe’s most modern travel hub!
Will it take Europe’s travel scene by storm, or will it be a big expensive flop? Read on to find out what the experts say.
Poland’s bold move to take on the giants
Will the new airport take Europe by storm, or will it be a mistake? Located in the Mazovian Voivodeship of central Poland, the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) is set to give giants like London Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle Airport, and Madrid-Barajas Airport a serious run for their money. This modern marvel will not just be a destination, but a launchpad for travelers across Central and Eastern Europe, connecting them to every corner of the globe.
Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak couldn’t hide his giddiness when he confirmed the location decision: “We have a location decision for the construction of the most modern airport in Europe, which will be built in central Poland,” he said. “Coming to a decision on a location is a key element of the CPK project. We are ready for real construction activities.”
This isn’t your typical airport building project – this is a hub designed with the future in mind. The passenger terminal will be able to handle a staggering 11,000 people per hour, with an eye on hitting 40 million annual passengers by 2035. And that’s just the beginning. A third runway and expanded terminals will push the capacity to a whopping 65 million passengers by 2060.
But that’s not all – this project is set to generate around 150,000 jobs. And let’s not forget the high-speed rail infrastructure that will stretch nearly 2,000 km. We’re talking about a transport revolution in Poland and Europe.
It’s definitely ambitious and very exciting, but not everyone is a fan of the new Polish airport. Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary has voiced strong opposition, slamming the project as “unnecessary.” He’s not shy in his criticism, calling the location choice “wrong” and the timing “even worse.”
Despite this pushback, Poland’s government is ploughing ahead, and the world will soon see a major new player in global travel.
So, when is Poland’s new airport going to happen?
Don’t pack your luggage just yet. Construction is set to kick off in 2026, a full two decades after the project was first announced back in 2005. Design tweaks have been made since then, with updates to the roof, walkways, and waiting areas for better comfort. Plus, final touches are being put on the air traffic control tower and runways.
While flights from the new hub are still a mystery, the hope is that this futuristic airport will open up new routes for airlines – with Poland leading the way.
Watch this space – this airport could be about to take off.
