Following its launch of DOOM 1 + 2, id Software looks to be bringing DOOM 64 to modern platforms. The Entertainment and Software Ratings Board (ESRB) in the United States recently rated the remaster for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. The excessive blood and gore earned it a Mature 17+ rating.
DOOM 64 is available for Xbox One, PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, with backwards compatibility support for current-gen consoles. Check out our review here. Perhaps the native version could add more features and support for higher resolutions, though it’s unknown when the port could actually launch.
Based on the 1997 Nintendo 64 title, DOOM 64 is a remaster with Achievements, a new save system, and The Lost Levels expansion. The latter is a collection of seven new levels, while the story links Doom 64 with DOOM and DOOM Eternal.
With DOOM: The Dark Ages serving as a prequel to DOOM, it makes sense why id Software would release DOOM 64 for modern platforms. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
