Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service (FE) expects increasing security threats in 2026, with Russia and China remaining the country’s main external risks, according to a report published by Reuters.

FE said Denmark faces a growing number of challenges as foreign states intensify cyber operations, influence activities and attempts to acquire sensitive technology. The agency described the global security environment as becoming increasingly complex.

Russia and China identified as the key strategic risks

Reuters reports that Russia and China will continue to pose the greatest external threats to Denmark’s security next year.

According to FE’s assessment:

  • Russia remains a major risk due to cyber intrusions and intelligence activity.
  • China is increasing its influence operations inside Denmark, including efforts to shape public opinion and gain access to advanced technology.
  • Both states are expected to expand hybrid tactics targeting Western nations.

Reuters adds that FE anticipates these pressures will intensify in 2026, reflecting wider geopolitical tensions.

Rising cyber and influence activity targeting Denmark

The intelligence agency said Denmark is likely to face:

  • More cyber attacks from foreign states
  • Attempts to interfere in public debate
  • Efforts to acquire sensitive Danish or Western technology

Reuters notes that FE views technology procurement as a core priority for foreign intelligence services seeking to strengthen military and commercial capabilities.

Why this matters for residents and expats in Denmark

A rise in cyber threats and foreign influence activity can affect:

  • Access to digital public services
  • Security of personal data and private-sector systems
  • Political stability and public trust in institutions

While FE did not identify a risk of military confrontation, Reuters reports that Denmark views digital and intelligence threats as an increasingly important dimension of national security.

FE will publish updated assessments throughout 2026 as intelligence trends develop. Denmark is expected to expand monitoring of cyber threats and tighten oversight of sensitive technology sectors.
