It was supposed to be just another routine flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Toronto.
But for the 80 passengers on board, Monday’s Delta flight turned into a nightmare when the plane crashed on the runway at Pearson Airport, skidded in flames, and flipped over, leaving everyone hanging upside down.
Miraculously, everyone survived. Many passengers managed to walk away without serious injuries, but some were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Delta has now offered $30,000 (£23,800) to each passenger as a gesture of goodwill. The airline clarified that this payment comes with ‘no strings attached,’ meaning passengers can accept the money without giving up any legal rights.
Passengers recall horror of hanging upside down in Delta Crash
For those on board, the crash was a blur of chaos and fear. Pete Koukov, who was sitting by the window, described the terrifying moment to NBC News: “We touched down, and then suddenly everything went sideways. Sparks, flames… and the next thing I knew, we were hanging upside down from our seatbelts. It all happened so fast.”
John Nelson told CNN that getting out of the overturned plane wasn’t easy for everyone: “We hit the ground, went sideways, and then we were upside down. I unbuckled and dropped down, but others needed help. It was scary, but people really came together to get everyone out.”
Peter Carlson shared his fears of a fire breaking out, telling CBS News: “The smell of fuel was strong. I knew we had to get out fast. Before I escaped, I helped a mum and her young son. It was just instinct.”
What’s next for Delta crash investigation?
As investigators work to understand what went wrong, Delta has been quick to show support. CEO Ed Bastian expressed his sympathy, saying: “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected.”
While the $30,000 offer is a good start, with the investigation still underway and passengers processing the trauma, it’s clear there’s more to come in this story.
