Danish PM steps in after Trump’s controversial comments about Greenland. Trump’s silence leaves the world wondering what’s next for the Arctic island.

It seems President-elect Donald Trump has Greenland firmly in his sights-and Denmark is not taking it lying down. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has put forward a request to speak with Trump after his recent comments hinting at using military or economic force to take control of the resource-rich island.

“We’ve suggested a conversation, and I expect it will happen,” Frederiksen told reporters on Thursday, January 9, making it clear that any talks would not occur until after Trump’s inauguration on January 20. So far, however, the incoming president has yet to respond to her request.

But Trump’s silence is the least of Denmark’s concerns, as his comments about Greenland’s future have been stirring up serious unease. On the same day that the Danish PM called for talks, Mr Trump refused to rule out taking drastic measures, including military intervention, to take control of Greenland – an idea he’s been vocal about since his November election.

Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders – not Trump’s playground

Frederiksen was quick to challenge Trump’s audacious plan. “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” she stated firmly in response to his inflammatory remarks. But while Trump’s comments have made waves in the headlines this week, Frederiksen, ever the diplomat, has reassured the public that there’s no reason to believe the incoming president is seriously planning an invasion of the island.

The Danish PM also highlighted the strong cooperation between Denmark and the U.S. within NATO, allaying fears of an international fallout. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen echoed Frederiksen’s sentiments, downplaying Trump’s threats and adding a crucial reminder: “You can take Donald Trump seriously without taking him literally.”

Racism accusations put Denmark in the spotlight

While Trump Jr. was busy charming the people of Greenland recently, he also stirred up another controversy, claiming that the Danish people exhibit racism toward native Greenlanders. Frederiksen was quick to tackle these accusations head-on, saying, “You can’t say that Danes are racists across the board.” Still, she conceded that racism against Greenlanders does exist, admitting a tough reality for the Danish nation.

As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes are on Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. Will there be an all-out diplomatic showdown, or will cooler heads prevail? Only time – and a potential meeting between Frederiksen and Trump – will tell.
