Millions across the world are celebrating Commonwealth Day today, March 10, 2025.
The annual observance unites 2.7 billion citizens from 56 Commonwealth nations under this year’s theme: “Together We Thrive.”
How nations are celebrating Commonwealth Day, 2025
Across the world, celebrations are taking many forms. In Nigeria’s Cross River state, schoolchildren are participating in special readings, while Pakistan is hosting a Commonwealth-themed Iftar. Antigua and Barbuda will hold a street parade, and in New Zealand, a special observance will take place in Parliament House. In Northern Ireland, a flag-raising ceremony will honour the occasion.
Since 1977, Commonwealth Day has expanded into a week-long celebration. This year, it includes the announcement of the Commonwealth Youth Awards and Commonwealth Peace Prize, honouring contributions to peace and development.
The 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth Secretariat also marks this year’s observance, celebrating its work in climate action, youth development, and support for small states.
Westminster Abbey Service for Commonwealth Day, 2025
In London, the Commonwealth Secretariat is hosting a reception welcoming representatives from across the member states. A vibrant multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey will celebrate the diversity and unity of the Commonwealth. The service will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 2:30pm GMT, and on the BBC’s YouTube channel from 2:45pm GMT.
King Charles III’s message of unity for Commonwealth Day, 2025
In his Commonwealth Day message, King Charles III highlighted the importance of solidarity in uncertain times. “The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today,” he stated. Reflecting on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, he also honoured the sacrifices made by Commonwealth servicemen and women during the conflict.
This year’s theme, “Together We Thrive,” reflects the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth. Rooted in the principles of family, unity, and peace, the theme highlights the importance of strong and connected communities that support and empower their members.
