A horror story emerged as all 42 passengers on a bus in Pasto, Colombia were damagingly impacted by a serious crash in which at least 12 are reported to have died, with all others in the vehicle being treated at a local hospital.
Bus crashed into gorge January 3
The crash took place in the early hours of January 3, with tourists looking to flock to the ever-popular hotspot for visitors, Santaurio de las Lajas in Ipiales, a region of Colombia known for its many attractions and intriguing culture. the bus was said to have veered into a steep drop – a 160ft gorge, as the driver was unable to rescue the incoming devastation.
As experts say the bus will have crashed due to a mechanical failure, drivers journeying through this treacherous area are sternly reminded to steer with caution, as the sharp bends and unforgiving falls in these country roads are a dangerous threat to lives.
Just a few months ago, in October 2024, two teenage girls, both only 14 years old, managed to narrowly escape a certain tragedy as a minibus skidded violently out of control towards the pair, with the girls scrambling away to safety. In 2016, a horrifying plane crash in Colombia claimed the lives of over 25 people.
South American routes such as this, the Pan-American connecting highway that links various hotspots, are famed to be extremely risky to drive through with unpredictable conditions affecting the already trepidatious blind turns and dangerous edges, with barely enough room for a single vehicle.
Colombia Minister of Transport offers condolences
The Colombia Minister of Transport María Constanza García Alicastro has recently come out to offer sympathies to all passengers and their families caught up in the devastation in Pasto, stating: “My deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and I express my full solidarity on behalf of the national government in these difficult times.”

As police have begun probes into the true nature and cause of the crash, survivors can see themselves fortunate that they weren’t part of the fatalities that claimed this awful wreck of tourists, with passengers from countries from across the world on board.
