Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has sparked a boycott of Netflix after very publicly cancelling his subscription to the streaming service.
In a post on X, Musk urged others to follow suit, stating, “Cancel Netflix: for the sake of your kids’ health.” The decision originates from his objections to the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park and its creator, British animator Hamish Steele.
Musk’s criticism centres on two issues: the series’ alleged promotion of “trans ideology” to children and controversial remarks attributed to Steele. The creator is accused of celebrating the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and labelling him a “Nazi”. Steele has denied celebrating Kirk’s death.
Dead End: Paranormal Park, a British animated series cancelled after its second season, is a mix of comedy, horror, and fantasy across 20 episodes. It follows two teenagers—a “trans character” named Barney and a “neurodiverse” character named Norma, who work at a theme park where a haunted house appears to be a portal to hell.
Musk boycott of Netflix in response to streaming content
Musk’s boycott call was in response to TV comedy writer Graham Linehan posting about cancelling his Netflix subscription, which stated, “If you hire someone who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s murder and creates content pushing pro-trans messages on my kids, you’ll NEVER get a cent of my money.” Musk echoed the sentiment, writing, “Same here.”
Following Musk’s announcement and boycott call, Netflix’s stock reportedly dropped by 2 per cent. However, the stock has seen a downward trend over the past few days, with a reported 2.3 per cent drop on October 1, 2025, and an additional 0.8 per cent decline in pre-market trading on October 2, 2025, reaching a two-month low of $1162 per share.
