Bill Gates’ predictions for 2035 have been doing the rounds again, but could they actually happen so soon?
Billionaire tech tycoon Bill Gates has set tongues wagging after claiming the rise of artificial intelligence could slash the working week to just two days – and replace two of society’s most trusted professions in the process. Should we believe him?
Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in February, Gates shared his bold vision for the future, suggesting that AI could soon make “great doctors” and “great teachers” as common – and cheap – as calculators.
“The era that we’re just starting is that intelligence is rare. You know, a great doctor, a great teacher… And with AI over the next decade, that will become free. Commonplace, you know? Great medical advice, great tutoring,” Gates told Fallon.
While the interview aired weeks ago, clips have only recently begun circling online – sparking fierce debate over whether Gates’s predictions are a stroke of genius… or Silicon Valley delusion.
Working two days a week? Sounds like a dream
Gates floated the idea that AI could usher in a world where most people only need to work “two or three days a week.” And to be fair, the idea of swapping the 9 to 5 for the 2 to 3 has its appeal.
“I love the way it’ll drive innovation forward, but I think it’s a little bit unknown… Will we be able to shape it? And so, legitimately, people are like, ‘Wow, this is a bit scary,’” he added.
Scary or not, trials of a four-day work week in the UK have been promising. In a 2023 pilot involving dozens of companies, 86% decided to stick with the shorter week permanently – with no drop in productivity.
But a two-day working week? That’s a whole other kettle of fish.
Do you think this will happen in the next 10 years?
