What should’ve been a heated Catalan derby turned into a scene of chaos and carnage as 17 people were mown down outside the RCDE Stadium just hours before Espanyol faced off against Barça on Thursday night.
Originally reported as a minor incident with 13 injuries, the true horror has now come to light. According to Catalonia’s emergency services, the Servei d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), a total of 17 people were injured in the shocking mass collision – including one person now fighting for their life in intensive care.
The critical victim is a 41-year-old whose identity has not yet been released. SEM confirmed that he remains in the ICU with serious injuries, as the number of casualties rose from the initial tally of 13, which had included nine minor injuries and four classed as less serious.
Police chief speaks out
After the final whistle blew, Eduard Sallent, head of the Mossos d’Esquadra’s Southern Metropolitan Police Region, addressed the press to shed light on what happened. Though still calling the incident accidental, Sallent promised a full investigation into how such a large number of people were struck in one terrifying moment.
