The company also launched a new study into muscle health alongside the launch of the lab.

Atlantia Clinical Trials has opened a new exercise physiology lab at its Cork headquarters.

Founded in 2011 by researchers at APC Microbiome, a Research Ireland centre based at University College Cork (UCC), Atlantia conducts clinical trials particularly for business testing nutraceutical and dietary supplements. It has conducted more than 200 trials with a participant database of around 40,000.

The new lab will enable the company to broaden its scope of work, expanding its clinical trial offerings from nutraceuticals and medical devices to sports performance, healthy ageing, cardiovascular health and metabolic disease, the company said.

The company has in-house clinics in Cork and Chicago, US, as well as more than 50 partner sites across the two continents.

The newest addition in Cork is “one of the first of its kind in Ireland”, the company said, focusing on combining advanced physiology testing with clinical research protocols, in a commercial capacity.

The lab opening also marks the beginning of a new study on muscle health, with a series of projects already planned for the months ahead, the company added.

“This investment represents an important step forward for Atlantia and for Ireland’s clinical research ecosystem, said Barry Skillington, the chief commercial officer at Atlantia Clinical Trials.

“Our physiology lab allows us to take on a wider variety of studies, delivering data that matters not only to athletes and clinicians but also to everyday people seeking healthier lives. We’re proud to be contributing to Ireland’s role as a centre of excellence for health research.”

While Ross Hamilton, a sports physiologist at Atlantia Clinical Trials added: “We now have the capability to test strength, endurance, cardiovascular performance and ageing markers under one roof.

“This allows us to understand how products and interventions affect human performance in a way that is both precise and practical. The muscle health study we are starting is just the beginning of what this lab will deliver.”

In 2022, Dr Sally Cudmore a co-founder and the former part-time CEO of Atlantia, was appointed as the director of innovation at UCC.
