Work on the Assassin’s Creed TV series (announced years ago at this point) is finally gaining steam – Netflix has announced who will play one of the leading roles in the adaptation.

The first news about Netflix’s adaptation of the game emerged in 2020, when the streaming giant set a deal with Ubisoft, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed and other titles such as Prince of Persia and Watch Dogs. In July 2025, it was officially confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed TV series was in the works, with Roberto Patino and David Wiener at the helm as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

Patino worked as a screenwriter on series such as Westworld and Sons of Anarchy. He also created the HBO series DMZ. In turn, Wiener previously served as a writer for Fear the Walking Dead, Brave New World, and Halo.

Assassin’s Creed has already had one adaptation. However, the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender was panned by both the game’s fans and critics alike.

The hopes for the Netflix series are higher – here’s everything we know about it so far.

When could the Assassin’s Creed TV series be released?

As reported by Deadline, the production of Netflix’s series will kick off in 2026 in Italy. It’s safe to assume that works on set and post production may take a year. When you then add in time for marketing and promotion, we expect Assassin’s Creed TV to premiere in at the end of 2027 at the earliest.

What is the plot of the Assassin’s Creed TV series?

The series will be based on the renowned game series, which currently consists of 14 volumes, not counting a dozen spin-offs. The plot line revolves around the conflict between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar.

As the official logline for the show reads:

[The series is] centred on the secret war between two shadowy factions – one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.

Both fractions are seeking and trying to gain control over the powerful artefacts known as Pieces of Eden. The Assassins, who stands for free will, and the Templars, who choose manipulation, have been waging their struggle for centuries. The Knights developed an advanced device called the Animus, which can unlock the user’s ancestral memory based on their genetic material.

The games are set both in the modern world and in a simulation of past centuries generated on the basis of the ancestral memories.

Unfortunately, no details were given about the plot of the Netflix’s series. Based on the mention of the Animus, it’s assumed that the series will once again fuse a modern day plot with a historical one.

We also don’t know whether they will explore an original story (like Michael Fassbender’s movie did), or if they’ll adapt one or more of the existing games. If they do the latter, there’s a number of characters and periods to choose from. Here’s some of the key ones from the main game titles:

  • Third Crusade in the Holy Land with Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad
  • Italian Renaissance with Ezio Auditore da Firenze
  • American Revolution with Connor Kenway (Ratonhnhaké:ton)
  • Caribbean Golden Age of Piracy with Edward Kenway
  • French Revolution with Arno Victor Dorian
  • Victorian London with Jacob and Evie Frye
  • Ancient Egypt with Bayek
  • Peloponnesian War with Alexios and/or Kassandra
  • Viking invasion of Britain with Eivor
  • Islamic Golden Age with Basim Ibn Ishaq
  • Sengoku period in Japan with Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke
  • Present day with Desmond Miles and/or Layla Hassan

It may be possible that the show will take an anthology approach, allowing it to jump between different periods every series. If we had to bet on which story would be the most recognisable to adapt, it would be that of Ezio – the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

Considering that the first season will be filmed in Italy, that’s now looking a lot more likely. Assassin’s Creed II is set in Florence, Venice and the surrounding areas during the Renaissance – with Desmond Miles relieving Ezio’s memories via the Animus.

That said, this game also reveals that Abstergo’s laboratory is located in modern Rome, so only scenes set in the 21st century may be filmed in Italy. In this case, any historical era may be chosen to intermingle with modern-day events.

There is a very short teaser trailer that shows off the game logo combined with the Netflix one – playing ‘Ezio’s Family’ underneath. Take a look below:

Who is starring in Assassin’s Creed TV series?

So far, Netflix has announced only one star who will appear in the series. Toby Wallace, known from Euphoria and Bikeriders, will star as one of the main characters in the series. For now, however, it’s unknown who the actor will play.

Who could Toby Wallace play in the Assassin’s Creed TV series?

As filming is set to take place in Italy, there’s two likely characters he could be. The first is Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the protagonist of the second game. Wallace, however, is not Italian – he is a British-born Australian.

As we mentioned earlier, the modern day story is also set in Italy, so Wallace could also be playing the present-day protagonist, Desmond Miles – an American (Wallace has played American roles before). Playing Desmond would, in theory, lock him into the series for longer if Netflix plans on exploring multiple time periods, as Miles relives the lives of three past assassins in total.

Both Ezio and Desmond rather unhelpfully look very similar (by design), so Wallace could pass for either.

Alternatively, he may be another character, possibly the ones mentioned above (like Altair), or someone brand new for the franchise altogether.

We’ll just have to wait and see if Netflix drops any more information in the coming months.
