Fancy watching a house land on the Moon? Here’s why everyone’s talking about it.
If you thought the Moon was just rocks and craters, think again. Tonight, for the first time ever, a tiny house, and yes, it’s a real, actual house, is about to make itself at home on the lunar surface. It’s not your usual bricks-and-mortar job, of course. This one’s more of a miniature marvel: a quirky little ‘Moonhouse’ designed by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg, set to make space history with a splash of imagination.
And here’s the best bit: you can see it happen live, right from your sofa.
Why drop a house on the Moon? The surprising story behind moonhouse
The whole idea behind Moonhouse is delightfully simple, remind us all that it’s OK to dream a little bigger. Mikael Genberg, the artist behind this bonkers plan, has been working on the project for nearly 25 years. He’s teamed up with astronomer Emil Vinterhav, who took care of the brainy technical side, and the Japanese space company ispace, who are actually getting this miniature house to the Moon.
This isn’t some astronaut crash pad, it’s a teeny-tiny home, about the size of a box of biscuits, 3D-printed with paper-thin metal walls so it can survive a rough landing and those mad lunar temperatures. Genberg reckons it’ll last unless an asteroid decides to drop by. “It’s about giving people hope and something to imagine,” he says. “If you know there’s a house on the Moon, suddenly you can picture yourself up there too. And let’s be honest, with everything happening in the world, maybe we need to imagine new places, especially for the kids.”
How to watch the Moonhouse landing and why it’s worth a look
The landing is all set for tonight, Thursday June 5, at 21:24 CET, and you don’t need a telescope, just a screen and an internet connection. The whole thing will be broadcast live on YouTube, so you can have a cuppa and witness a bit of human creativity leaving its mark on another world.
This isn’t just for space geeks or art buffs. It’s for anyone who needs a reminder that humans can be gloriously daft and incredibly inspiring, sometimes at the same time. If you’ve ever stared up at the night sky and wondered ‘what if?’, this one’s for you.
