The Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) in Russia says its cancer vaccine, called EnteroMix, is ready to go. It just needs a thumbs-up from the Russian Ministry of Health before doctors can start using it. This is a big step forward in trying to beat cancer, giving many patients a reason to be hopeful.
This isn’t just some overnight thing. EnteroMix has been tested for three years, and the results look good. It seems safe, and it really does a job on tumours. The idea is that the vaccine teaches the body’s defence system to find and wipe out cancer cells. Depending on the type of cancer, tests have shown that it can slow down tumour growth and reduce its size by 60 per cent to 80 per cent. Plus, patients in these tests lived longer. The FMBA head, Veronika Skvortsova, who used to be the Russian Health Minister, says the vaccine is safe, even if you get several doses.
Right now, they’re running tests with 48 people who have colon cancer. But that’s not all. The FMBA is also working on vaccines for glioblastoma, which is a tough brain tumour, and some melanomas that hit the skin and eyes. The plan is to attack cancer from different angles, which could change how we treat it.
What’s really interesting is that they want to give EnteroMix to patients for free. Andrei Kaprin, the top cancer doctor at the Russian Ministry of Health, says they want to ensure that money doesn’t stop people from getting the treatment they need. If they can pull this off, it could serve as a model for making healthcare fairer, especially in areas where people can’t afford expensive treatments. Russia wants to be a leader in making cancer care available to everyone. Initially, it’ll likely only be available in Russia, but people around the world are eagerly awaiting the possibility of its wider use.
How does Enteromix work?
We don’t have all the details about how EnteroMix is made, but it appears to utilise some of the latest immunotherapy methods. It might use mRNA or a viral vector to trigger the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells, thereby stopping tumours from growing and spreading. This aligns with the trend of developing treatments tailored to each individual’s unique body. The fact that the vaccine shrank tumours by up to 80% in tests is a big deal. If the tests on people show the same thing, EnteroMix could become a key part of how we treat cancer, maybe even better than things like chemotherapy and radiation.
If this works, it could really lower the number of people dying from cancer, especially from cancers that are hard to treat. Making it free could also mean more people get access to good treatment. Plus, if this vaccine works, it could lead to vaccines that stop cancer before it even starts, which is something doctors have been aiming for. This could also encourage other countries and drug companies to invest more effort in immunotherapy and cancer vaccines. However, everyone is being cautious and wants to see the full test results to ensure EnteroMix is safe and effective in people. Even though there’s still a way to go, EnteroMix is giving hope to people with cancer and their families. If it does what it’s supposed to do, it could change cancer care and give people a better shot at beating this terrible disease.
