Pop star Ronan Keating has expressed his outrage over the heartbreaking court verdict that saw the driver who caused his brother’s death walk free without serving a single night behind bars.

As previously reported by the viraltrendingcontent, Ciaran Keating, 57, was travelling with his wife Annmarie to watch their son, Ruairí, play football when his Ford Focus was struck head-on by a 22-year-old motorist’s Audi A3 on the N5 near Swinford, Co Mayo, in July 2023. Ciaran died at the scene, and Annmarie was so severely injured that she was unable to attend her husband’s funeral.

The controversial verdict in the Ciaran Keating case

This week, Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court handed driver Dean Harte a 17-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban for careless driving causing death and serious injury – sparking outrage among the Keating family. The court heard that Harte had veered onto the wrong side of the road shortly after sending a WhatsApp message and had traces of cannabis in his blood, though he claimed it was from a party days before.

Judge Eoin Garavan pointed to “no evidence of intoxication, no speed issues” and “no egregious example of earlier dangerous driving” as factors that kept Harte out of prison. He had also offered a letter of remorse, which the Keating family refused.

Moments after the verdict, the Boyzone star took to Instagram, posting:

“Today’s sentencing was a devastating example of just how broken our justice system is. You can kill a man… and you can walk free. Not even a single night in prison. Just a slap on the wrist and a ticket to carry on with your life, like nothing ever happened.

“And then we wonder why we keep seeing this kind of behaviour on our roads, why people keep dying in road accidents across Ireland every week? It’s a joke and it’s morally corrupt that rather than trying to fix our broken system, they all turn a blind eye.

“Shame on Dean Harte but more-so shame on everyone involved in this process that contributed to the heartbreaking outcome for my family today.”

He added; “We will continue to fight for Ciaran’s justice.

At this time we think of all the other families who have found themselves in our position, and we pray that other families never do.”

The fight goes on for Ronan Keating and his family

With heartbreak at the wheel and justice seemingly at a standstill, Ronan Keating vows his family will press on in their quest for what they see as true justice. For them, the verdict delivered no closure – just questions about a system they feel has veered off course. As the Keatings grieve, they’re urging Ireland and its courts to steer the country back onto a safer, fairer road.
