One of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence, Mira Murati, has officially launched her next ambitious venture: Thinking Machines Lab. With a handpicked team of elite AI researchers and engineers—including key figures from OpenAI, Character.ai, and Google DeepMind—Murati is positioning her new company as the next major player in the AI revolution, alongside OpenAI, and Anthropic.

After stepping down as CTO of OpenAI in 2024, Murati remained largely out of the public eye. But behind the scenes, she was meticulously assembling a powerhouse team dedicated to advancing AI in a way that prioritizes understanding, customization, and general capability. Now, with the official unveiling of Thinking Machines Lab, she is ready to reshape the AI landscape.

Mira Murati: From OpenAI to Thinking Machines Lab

Murati has long been regarded as one of the most influential figures in AI. Born in Vlorë, Albania, she pursued engineering studies in the United States, earning degrees from Dartmouth College and Colby College. She quickly established herself as a key player in the AI field, working at Tesla and Leap Motion before joining OpenAI in 2018.

At OpenAI, Murati played a pivotal role in the development of some of the most widely used AI technologies today, including ChatGPT, DALL-E, GPT-4, and Sora. Initially joining as VP of Applied AI and Partnerships, she quickly rose through the ranks to become Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in 2022. Her leadership helped OpenAI scale its generative AI systems and shape the broader conversation on AI ethics and safety.

However, her tenure at OpenAI was not without controversy. In November 2023, Murati was briefly appointed as interim CEO of OpenAI following the surprise ousting of Sam Altman. This move triggered internal turmoil, with employees and investors rallying to reinstate Altman. Just three days later, Emmett Shear was appointed CEO, and within a week, Altman returned to his position, leaving Murati back in her CTO role. The power struggle and sudden reversals raised questions about OpenAI’s internal governance and leadership dynamics.

In September 2024, Murati announced her departure from OpenAI, stating that she wanted to do her “own exploration.” This decision came amid a wave of executive exits, including Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and VP of Research Barret Zoph, signaling deeper internal shifts within OpenAI.

A Bold Vision for AI

Unlike many AI firms that focus on building fully autonomous systems, Murati’s team aims to create AI that collaborates with humans, allowing people to tailor AI models to fit their unique needs and goals.

In her announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Murati emphasized three key pillars of Thinking Machines Lab’s approach:

  • Helping people adapt AI systems to work for their specific needs.
  • Developing strong foundations for building more capable AI models.
  • Fostering a culture of open science, where research is shared to benefit the entire AI community.

“Our goal is simple,” she wrote. “Advance AI by making it broadly useful and understandable through solid foundations, open science, and practical applications.”

An AI Dream Team

Thinking Machines Lab has already recruited some of the most respected names in AI research. Among its founding members are John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI and the head of research at Thinking Machines Lab, and Barret Zoph, a former OpenAI leader who now serves as the company’s CTO. Additionally, Jonathan Lachman, OpenAI’s former head of special projects, has joined the company, along with at least 10 top engineers and researchers from major AI labs.

With a lineup of experts who have contributed to groundbreaking projects like ChatGPT, Character.ai, Mistral, OpenAI Gym, Fairseq, and Segment Anything, Thinking Machines Lab is positioned to push the boundaries of AI innovation.

Bridging the AI Knowledge Gap

One of the company’s core goals is to close the knowledge gap in AI research. Murati believes that while AI capabilities have advanced dramatically, a lack of transparency and understanding is holding the field back. Thinking Machines Lab is committed to openly publishing research, technical blog posts, and code, making AI advancements more accessible to the broader scientific community.

A New Era of AI Development

Unlike some AI companies that focus purely on proprietary models, Thinking Machines Lab emphasizes flexibility and adaptability. The company is working on AI systems that can be easily customized for different industries, from science and engineering to creative applications.

Some of its guiding principles include:

  • Advanced multimodal AI capabilities to improve communication and integration with real-world environments.
  • A strong focus on infrastructure quality, ensuring AI tools are reliable and efficient.
  • AI safety through real-world testing, prioritizing security and ethical use while maximizing user freedom.

A Challenger to the AI Giants

With its unique approach, Thinking Machines Lab is already being recognized as a major competitor to OpenAI, Anthropic, Llama, Groq and Grok.. While the company is still in its early stages, its ambitious goals, top-tier talent, and commitment to open science suggest it could become one of the most important AI companies of the decade.

Join the Revolution

Thinking Machines Lab is actively hiring, looking for product builders, machine learning experts, and research program managers to help shape its future. As AI enters a new era of human collaboration, Murati and her team are leading the charge toward a future where AI is not just powerful, but truly accessible and adaptable.
