OnePlus Confirms Open 2 Foldable Won’t Be Released This Year

OnePlus won’t be releasing a foldable in 2025, with the company confirming that any chance of the rumoured OnePlus Open 2 will have to be placed on pause for the time being.

Pausing, not stoppingTaking off the pressureOnePlus’ foldable future

In a decidedly candid and open (no pun intended) display from the company, Vale G. (as he goes by on OnePlus’ official forums), Product Manager for the OnePlus Open, just published a post titled ‘A Note About Our Foldable Strategy for 2025 – Recalibrating for Innovation‘.

In it, he states that “we’ve [OnePlus] carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year”.

Pausing, not stopping

In spite of what is likely disappointing news for fans of the original Open, Vale was keen to reassure followers that this doesn’t signal OnePlus’ departure from the foldable segment entirely; going on to say, “…our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category”.

OnePlus’ step back from the foldable space comes in the same week as sister company Oppo lifted the lid on its newest foldable offering – the Oppo Find N5 (pictured below) – the device that many expected to serve as the basis for the OnePlus Open 2.

Oppo’s next foldable is set to launch on 20 February, but you can check out our early hands-on with the Find N5 right now. This is the closest thing we’ll see to an Open successor in 2025.

Taking off the pressure

In his post, Vale actively sings the praises of the Oppo Find N5, reinforcing the two brands’ current, more unified approach to product releases and marketing. What this also means is that segment leaders like Samsung have one less competitor to worry about in 2025.

The OnePlus Open 2 would have been the perfect foil to show the next Z Fold up

The South Korean company’s latest Galaxy S25 series focused far more on AI and software innovation, rather than sporting any major improvements to hardware. The same is expected for its next foldable – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

In major markets like the US, where Oppo doesn’t readily operate, the OnePlus Open 2 would have been the perfect foil to show the next Z Fold up, highlighting Samsung’s potential complacency. This will now go unchecked.

OnePlus’ foldable future

With no OnePlus foldable in 2025, questions then emerge as to what the brand’s next folding offering will yield. Assuming OnePlus makes a return to the segment in 2026, it’ll mark three years since the debut of the original Open, in which time players like Samsung, Google, Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo and, of course, Oppo, will have further reshaped the segment in numerous ways.

There’s a world in which OnePlus lifts the Find N5’s design, as it would have done this year, while any plans Oppo has for a Find N6 could, once again, greatly influence how the next OnePlus folding phone looks and feels. We’ll just have to wait and see.
