In his latest controversial move, Donald Trump has directed the declassification of all remaining government records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

The announcement was made during an Oval Office signing ceremony, fulfilling Trump’s promise to bring long-awaited transparency to these pivotal moments in history.

Conspiracy theories surrounding the JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinations

“This is a big one,” Trump remarked, to reporters, calling the decision “long overdue.” He added, “A lot of people have waited for this for decades.” The move follows years of speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the three assassinations, all of which had significant political and cultural ramifications.

The executive order calls for the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Attorney General to prepare a plan to declassify the JFK records within 15 days and those relating to RFK and Dr King within 45 days. However, Trump’s track record with similar orders during his first term raised some scepticism. In 2017, he deferred the full release of JFK-related files due to appeals from intelligence agencies citing national security concerns.

President John F. Kennedy assassination

JFK was fatally shot in Dallas, Texas, in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former Marine. Two days later, Oswald was killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. The assassination has long been the subject of debate, with researchers questioning whether Oswald acted alone.

RFK, assassinated in 1968 while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, was killed by Sirhan Sirhan, who some believe was part of a larger conspiracy. Dr King, an icon of the civil rights movement, was shot in Memphis the same year, with James Earl Ray convicted of the crime. Both cases continue to spark doubts and theories of government involvement.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of John F. Kennedy, has been outspoken about his belief that Sirhan Sirhan is innocent. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a former independent presidential candidate who has a history of spreading conspiracy theories, including vaccines, and has recently been picked by Trump to oversee the Department of Health and Human Services. He’s also fiercely adverse to adding fluoride to drinking water. He claimed that fluoride is “associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease.”

The National Archives

Historians and researchers, including Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, anticipate potential revelations from the declassified files. “There’s always the possibility that something will emerge – a small tip of a much larger iceberg,” Sabato said.

The National Archives, which houses over 5 million assassination-related documents, has previously released most files in compliance with a 1990s mandate. However, roughly 3,000 records remain partially or fully redacted, many originating from the CIA.

Despite Trump’s directive, some files, such as tax records, remain exempt from disclosure, while others may have been lost or destroyed over the decades.

The release of these documents is expected to provide further insight into intelligence operations of the 1960s, potentially fuelling renewed debate and research into these assassinations that continue to shape America’s historical narrative.
